Saturday, 8/11/01. Friday was spent at Mission
Beach so the boys could get a taste of the Pacific Ocean. The report was that
the water was cold. Today it's off to Los Angeles for a little sightseeing on
Venice Beach and a California Angels game at night in Anaheim. The team is
scheduled to arrive in Cleveland at 5:00 pm EDT on Sunday via Houston on
Continental Airlines. |
Thursday, 8/09/01. Parma was eliminated from the
USABF tournament this morning with a 3-1 loss to the San Diego Rookies at El
Capitan High School in Lakeside, CA. It was another day with good pitching but
the hitters couldn't put much together while the defense held it's own. Blake
Green gave the team everything he could on the mound and did an admirable job
with six innings of work, giving up two runs on four hits, while walking four
and striking out seven. He didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning and the
two runs came in the sixth. Meanwhile, the game was a pitching duel for the
first three innings until Parma managed to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Dave
Waters walked, Brent Benefield singled him to third base, and Brian Vickers
drove home Waters. It looked like that might be enough until the sixth inning
when San Diego pushed across two runs on two doubles, a walk and a single for a
2-1 lead. Brett Diamond pitched in the seventh and gave up the final run on two
hits while Brent Benefield came on to register the final three outs. Parma
could only muster five hits, a single in the second inning for Benefield, Drew
Saylor's single in the fourth, Benefield & Vickers run producing singles in
the fourth and Sean Van Guilder's infield single in the fifth. The team
finished the tournament with a 5-3 record. That concludes the season for Parma.
The team will be returning to Ohio on Sunday. Good luck to Izzy Victor, Troy
Yoder, Danny Painter and Brian Vickers as they head off to college and the next
step in their baseball careers. |
